Read MoreFor passive suspension systems, a balance must be struck between comfort and handling during vehicle design, which also brings about differences in chassis suspension styles between different brands.
When one of the parameters of the spring stiffness and the damping coefficient of the shock absorber is adjustable, it is a semi-active suspension, and the damping coefficient is generally adjustable, such as the CDC damping continuously variable system and the MRC electromagnetic induction suspension system.
If the spring stiffness and damping coefficient can be adjusted, it is an active suspension, which generally refers to adding a variable stiffness air spring on the basis of a variable damping shock absorber to form an air suspension.
In addition to upgrading the original mechanical coil spring and passive shock absorber to air spring+electronic control damper, the air suspension also adds a set of air supply system and complex electronic control system, so that the air spring can pass the air pressure inside the spring.The charging and discharging can effectively change the height and stiffness of the vehicle body, and the electronically controlled shock absorber can adjust the softness and hardness of the suspension through the change of the damping coefficient. The two work together to improve the driving comfort and handling.
The main components of the air ride suspension system are composed of air supply system (compressor, air storage tank, distribution valve), ECU , air spring, CDC shock absorber, various sensors and related supporting pipelines.
The ECU receives signals from various sensors, determines the motion state of the body (speed, acceleration, road impact, etc.), and adjusts the state of the chassis. The air source is provided by the compressor, and the air bag is inflated and deflated through the distribution valve to adjust the stiffness of the air spring and the height of the vehicle body. By adjusting the damping coefficient of the CDC shock absorber, the parameters of the suspension are adjusted in real time.
For the traditional suspension, there are two types of structures, one-piece and split, depending on the chassis design of the vehicle.
For the front suspension: because the design space is relatively compact, the integrated design of coil spring + damper is generally adopted;
For the rear suspension: Generally, a split structure design with separate springs and dampers is adopted, so that the layout space of the rear axle can be maximized.
The air suspension also has two layout modes of integrated / separated, which meet the layout requirements of different models and different spaces. There is an integrated air suspension that combines electronically controlled dampers and air springs, which are generally used for the front suspension position, while electronically controlled damping. The separate air suspension that separates the air spring from the air spring is generally used in the rear suspension position, but if the rear suspension space is limited, an integrated air suspension will also be used.
